When the assistant names a brand, the old funnel misses the nudge
A chatbot can name a brand before any ad click or last-click model sees the customer move. The paper does not prove sales. It says planned assistant recommendations appear to raise search and site visits before standard attribution can see the nudge.
What the source reports
The public arXiv abstract reports an observational panel study joining opt-in clickstream data to the same users’ ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini conversations. For conversational-assistant brand recommendations to users with no recent observed engagement, same-name Google search rose 4.3 percentage points with a bracketed interval of 3.1 to 5.5, visits to the brand’s own site rose 2.4 points with an interval of 1.4 to 3.5, and brand-specific retailer-page visits rose 1.0 point with an interval of 0.3 to 1.7 over matched backward placebos. The authors stress that naive all-mention funnels are confounded because many mentions are incidental references to brands users already use. Incidental name-drops moved behavior far less, and the design does not observe transactions, so retail visits are purchase-adjacent rather than purchases.
