Writing prompts that make people think first

Stopping to plan before using AI may pay off. In a study of 297 workers writing 594 essays, guided goal-setting and task planning improved writing quality. Workers found the AI less helpful even as their work improved; this was an AI-assisted writing study, not a school trial.

What the source reports

Kewenig and colleagues ran a randomized study with 297 workers who wrote 594 essays with AI help. Some received prompts to set a goal and break their task into steps. The abstract reports better writing, plus gains on a new task soon after those prompts were removed. It also reports signs of better topic recall three days later. Yet participants using the prompts rated the AI as less helpful and the work as more demanding. The finding is about short-term writing tasks and reported recall. The daily digest does not claim these prompts improve K-12 learning or guarantee long-term gains.
