Rural data centers may get tax breaks. Who benefits?
More than 100 planned rural data centers could qualify for expanded federal tax breaks, WIRED reports. The program rewards investment, not local jobs. But possible eligibility does not mean a company claimed the break. That is a key gap between the promise and the proof.
What the source reports
WIRED says Searchlight Institute found more than 100 rural data centers that may get federal tax breaks. The sites are planned or still being built. The tax program rewards investment but does not require local jobs. So what do nearby towns get? The map shows only that a site may qualify. It does not show that a company claimed a tax break. Several firms named in the report say they did not use the program. Searchlight tracked fewer than 700 projects in all. Its list does not cover every planned site.
