Tesla changes the name, not the driver’s job

WIRED reports that Tesla adopted the name “Assisted Driving” in Europe after German officials challenged the claim of full self-driving. Drivers must still pay attention and step in when needed. At the time of the report, approval across the EU was still pending. A clearer name may help set expectations. It is not proof that the system is safe or approved.

What the source reports

WIRED reports that Tesla began using the name “Assisted Driving” in Europe instead of “Full Self-Driving.” German officials had objected to the suggestion that a car could drive on its own. The driver still has to watch the road and step in when needed. At the time of WIRED’s report, approval across the EU was still pending. The name matters because it tells people who is in charge when the system makes a mistake. But a better label is only a description of the human role. It is not a safety test, and it does not grant approval to use the system.
