The clean score can hide the learning loss. A controlled programming study found that ChatGPT improved performance during the task while lowering retention and ownership afterward. Completion alone was a weak measure of lasting learning.

A controlled study compared code work by students with and without ChatGPT. Students with the tool did better on the task. Later, they kept less of what they learned and felt less that the work was theirs. This does not mean task gains have no value or that schools should ban the tool. It means schools should check what students can still explain, recall, and do on their own. The abstract does not give the group size or effect sizes.
