Show the AI path it did not take
An AI system can show its final answer yet hide the choices it made. In a study with 48 people, showing another path helped people question its data analysis. This was a narrow test, described in a preprint abstract. It does not prove that the display would help in schools or at work.
What the source reports
Madeleine Grunde-McLaughlin and colleagues studied how people review an AI system’s data analysis. Such a system can take several possible paths before it produces an answer. A finished result may hide the path it chose and the path it passed over. The researchers tested a way to display an alternative route. In a study with 48 people, seeing that alternative reduced blind reliance on the system. The digest describes a preprint abstract, not an appraisal of the full paper. It does not tell us that the same display would help with school decisions or a live workplace task. The supported point is narrower: a visible path not taken can help people question a result they might otherwise accept.
