Talking through an idea is not the same as revising an essay

Researchers compared chatbot-supported writing with a control for 65 secondary students. Students using Maike had more discussion about ideas. Moving from that talk into essay revisions was linked to score gains. That link does not show the chatbot caused a higher score than the other condition. The observed gains were linked to changes in the writing.

What the source reports

The paper describes a classroom comparison with 65 secondary students. One condition used Maike, a chatbot designed to ask about arguments and help students spot what needs work. The other condition shared the same underlying AI model and modes. Idea-level discussion occurred more often with Maike. When students moved from ideas they discussed into changes in their essays, that move was linked to score gains. The link is not proof that the chatbot caused those gains. The abstract does not establish a higher essay score for the Maike group than for the control group. The study separates discussing an argument from revising the written essay.
